Excellence Reporter: Paul, what is the meaning of life?

Paul Hague: The meaning of Life, in my experience, is to realize the exquisite sense of mystical Wholeness, which is the True Nature of all of us. I have come to this realization through the creative power of Life, emanating directly from the Divine Origin of the Universe, like an effervescent fountain, guided by the fundamental law of the Cosmos: Wholeness is the union of all opposites, which I call the Principle of Unity.

This irrefutable, universal truth tells me that none of us is ever separate from any other being, including the Supreme Being, contrary to what I was taught as a teenager living in England in the 1950s. Like the Internet, we are all interconnected in a complex, multidimensional network of hierarchical relationships, which are both complementary and contradictory.

Building on the underlying simplicity of this transcultural, transdisciplinary network of computers, Life has carried me from the Alpha to the Omega Point of evolution and back again, answering the most critical unanswered question in science: What is causing scientists and technologists, aided and abetted by computer technology, to drive the pace of scientific discovery and technological invention at unprecedented exponential rates of acceleration?

I have been able to answer this question through profound introspection because in the spring of 1980 I passed through a revelatory death-and-rebirth process. Life has thereby taught me to start afresh at the very beginning, free of everything that humans have learnt during the past several thousand years. By then generalizing the modelling methods that information systems architects use to design applications and databases, Life has shown me how to integrate all knowledge in all cultures and disciplines into a coherent whole—the elusive Theory of Everything, as the solution to the ultimate problem in human learning.

Most significantly, evolution has become fully conscious of itself within me, enabling me to use the nonlinear mathematics of systems theory to develop a comprehensive model of the entire 13.8 billion years of evolution since the most recent big bang. As evolution is a bifurcating, accumulative process, this model of the psychodynamics of society explains why the world is degenerating into chaos at the present time.

Essentially, this is happening because during the five thousand years of the patriarchal epoch, the evolution of the mind has been more divergent than convergent, leading to academic specialization and the division of labour in the workplace. Furthermore, from one generation to the next, we have learnt what our parents and teachers want us to learn, imposing cultural conditioning and creating psychosocial structures that inhibit us from realizing our fullest potential as intelligent, conscious humans.

To bring a sense of order to this dualistic chaos, Life has healed my fragmented mind through the application of Self-reflective Intelligence, the Divine quality that distinguishes humans from the other animals and machines. This awakening, liberating activity has enabled me to map the Cosmic Psyche, telling me what the Universe is, how it is intelligently designed, and what it truly means to be human, far beyond any level of artificial general intelligence that even quantum computers might aspire to achieve.

Recognizing that mystical psychology is the primary science, free from the materialism and mechanism of physics, there is no longer any division within me between mysticism and mathematics or science and spirituality, giving me a profound sense of Inner Peace in Nonduality. The inseparable sides of the coin both recognize that Consciousness is Ultimate Reality, providing the Divine Light that enables Intelligence, as the eyesight of Consciousness, to view the Cosmos holographically, like a laser.

Another metaphor for Cosmic Consciousness is a vast Ocean, which greatly helps me to unify the two aspects of my identity, from Latin idem ‘same’. For, we are all both the entire Ocean and the waves and currents on and beneath the surface of the Ocean, but never separate from it. So, I have both a Genuine Identity, in which I live in union with the Divine, like everyone else, and a unique, illusory identity that changes little through life, with a name that my parents gave me.

The holistic, integral vision that appears through the action of the Principle of Unity shows me that all beings in the world of form emerge from the Divine and return there at the end of their natural lifespans in a Cosmogonic life-and-death cycle. In particular, Homo sapiens ‘wise human’ is not immortal, either as individuals or as a species. One day a generation of children will be born who will not grow old enough to have children of their own. It is thus not the purpose of life to procreate indefinitely, through infinite time.

To reconcile ourselves to the precarious human condition, living in harmony with what Heraclitus called the Hidden Harmony, it is vital that we live in the Eternal Now, in conscious union with the meaningless Immortal Ground of Being that we all share, knowing that time does not exist in Reality. So, if we are to collectively understand the meaning of Life as a species at these end times we live in, it is essential that we come together with a common purpose, realizing that Love is the Divine Essence that we all share.

I was born in England in the middle of the Second World War and was educated mainly as a mathematician, graduating in 1964. I then spent most of my business career with IBM in sales and marketing in London during the 1960s and 70s and in software development in Stockholm during the 1990s, looking at organizational processes and entities through the holistic eyes of an information systems architect in pursuit of excellence.

In the late 1970s, when developing a national marketing programme for interactive computing, I saw that following the invention of the stored-program computer thirty years earlier the global economy holds the seeds of its own destruction within it, and could well collapse when my children came to be bringing up children of their own.

So, knowing little about what it means to be human, in contrast to machines with so-called artificial intelligence, I resigned from my influential marketing job in 1980 and set out to explore how we could collectively rebuild our education and economic systems on Love, Peace, and the Truth, enabling the next generations to thrive and survive for as long as possible, realizing their fullest potential as humans.

Since then, I have been on the most incredible adventure, rising to the heights of ecstasy and plunging to depths of despair, as I have single-handedly sailed the stormy high seas into the unknown, with only fuzzy mental maps to guide me. Eventually, as more and more of the Universe’s innermost secrets were revealed to me, these cognitive maps became clarified and integrated and I was led into calmer waters, with a profound understanding of the meaning of Life in Stillness and the Presence of the Divine.

During the last decade, I have written ten transcultural, transdisciplinary books on mystical Wholeness, explaining the root causes of our rapidly changing world, currently writing one final book titled Unifying Mysticism and Mathematics: To Reveal Love, Peace, Wholeness, and the Truth.
