Dr. Rahman Beckwith: How Do I Create Meaning in My Life?

2Excellence Reporter: Dr. Beckwith, what is the meaning of life?

Dr. Rahman Beckwith: I suppose that there could be as many different meanings of life as there are people. I believe that each of us is the Divine uncovering itself through various experiences.

For me, life is about becoming a representative of the highest ideals of Divinity on earth. Specifically, I want to embody Divine love and grace. (At birth, I was given the name Rahman which is a name of God meaning Most Compassionate or Merciful).

I see the repercussions of my loving presence reverberating out to lift the consciousness of the entire planet and beyond.

We are all beautiful expressions of Divinity and we each create meaning in the ways that are important to us.

In my practice, I integrate spirituality with psychology. It does appear that when people can find a higher cause to live for, that they often feel that their lives are in fact more meaningful. Having a spiritual framework can be part of this and can enhance a person’s life experience.

A spiritual purpose may manifest in the form of following the personal mission of one’s soul, being devoted to a diety, teacher or spiritual community, or serving humanity in some fashion. Creative missions can feel extremely meaningful, as we allow our inspirations to flow. People want to leave a legacy on earth for the betterment of the planet, and that may take the form of a book, an organization, or a project that makes an impact.

Even people with missions that are as simple as seeing their grandchildren grow up have been shown to extend their lives according to research. In the end, having something to live for that contributes to another’s wellbeing is a significant contributing factor towards of a meaningful life.

If you want to give yourself more vitality in your life, you could ask yourself this important question: How do I make my life meaningful?
