What Makes a Compassionate City?

Scott Goyette: A More Compassionate World

Austin, Texas

Standing Blue ShirtExcellence Reporter: Scott, what do you do to contribute to creating a more compassionate community and world?

Scott Goyette: Compassion begins with me. Before all else, I must be compassionate with myself. Our world is a reflection of the individual, so without self-love, and personal compassion, it would be a tall order for me to influence the creation of a more compassionate world.

One thing that I practice daily is “shining my light as bright as possible”. I forgive myself for past mis-steps and love myself more every day, so I can be a positive example for others. Specifically, rather than always telling people how to live or become more compassionate, I model the behaviors I want to instill in others. I believe that if I shine bright and become a true energizer, others will follow my lead. Simply put, if I can be more authentic, vulnerable, and honest, this world will undoubtedly become a more beautiful and compassionate place.

In addition to my continued personal development, I also work with those interested in becoming more compassionate through the Go Love Now organization. Our team empowers youth, educators and parents to embrace self-love, compassion and kindness. We do this by redefining the word LOVE. We have created specfic action steps for individuals to become more compassionate and loving by utilizing the following acronym:

L – Listen to yourself and those around you more closely. Connecting more deeply with yourself and others is paramount to personal and community growth.

O – Observe your needs and the needs of those around you. Take action to serve yourself and others when necessary. Communities do not fall apart due to evil, they fall apart due to the lack of action taken when people see evil and do nothing about it.

V – Voice your thoughts because YOU MATTER! Let people know how your feel and do not be afraid to ask for help. The strongest people in any community know that communities are built together.

E – Empathize with all! Every human has their own story, and although we assume we know what others feel, we truly do not. All people are doing the best they can with what they were given.

The action steps to L.O.V.E. more can definitely help communities grow. We have seen it work in schools and other organizations, so we are hopeful it can help your community as well.
