Tess Whitehurst: The Meaning and the Mystery of Life

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAExcellence Reporter: Tess, what is the meaning of life?

Tess Whitehurst: Google tells me “meaning” means definition, implied or explicit significance, or purpose. To be honest, when I consider the meanings of meaning, I’m not sure life has any. It may. But there’s no way of knowing.

What I can ascribe meaning to is my own experience of life. In my life experience, there are things that give me a sense that I treasure: a sense that my existence is lovingly, wonderfully interwoven with the existence of everything else. Those things are humans, animals, plants, the sky, the earth, music, laughter, art, and all other shimmering manifestations of beauty and conscious connection.

I like to see my life as a great experiment: how much can I love? How much joy can I make room for? How much pleasure can I stand?

In a sense, our desire to find meaning is what makes us human: what other creature is so obsessed with symbols, numbers, words, and definitions? Does meaning exist outside of us? Is it something fundamental and intrinsic to life? I don’t know. You don’t know. No one knows. The mystery is relentless, and it shows no signs of letting up. But to me, it doesn’t matter: the profound inspiration I find in the mystery is more than enough.
