Nicolae Tanase: Azim, what is the meaning of life?
Azim Jamal: Life is vast, infinite, endless and incomparable. It continues to remain a mystery, a mystery that can only be experienced and not solved.
So in my experience, the very meaning of life is in its living. When examined at this level, everything acquires a meaning, a certain reason for existence, certain integrity. Many times we realize this in hindsight, when we see our past dots connecting so perfectly to make us who we are in the present.
So when it comes to your individual self, here is a great opportunity for creating meaning, for creating your journey, your unique story.
So the meaning of life is a function of individual expression and different for every person.
I love a quote by Albert Einstein, which says, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
The power to create meaning lies with you.
So, how do we choose what meaning to give to life?
In my opinion whatever resonates the most with you, feels most true, most right, most you, is your path of meaning. For example, I started my life as a professional accountant and a very successful one at that. But gradually I realized the role that brought me truly alive was inspirational speaking. The joy of sharing a part of yourself, sharing something that moved you, made you, the energy of a live audience, the mutual revelations and learning we experience, was something that feels most right, most incredible to me. And I can say that if I hadn’t lived this part of myself, my life wouldn’t have felt so meaningful to me.
So choosing your life purpose and then living it, to me seems the most fundamental way of creating meaning in life. But it does not mean that we are bound by it. Life is ever changing and you might see your purpose shifting as your life evolves. But if you remain authentic you will see that life will continue to unfold and fill you with wonder.
By choosing to remain present, and not consumed by the baggage of the past and future we can change the quality of our experience of the present moment.
Sometimes people live their entire lives in a blind pursuit of things they don’t need, situations they don’t want. They unfortunately live the lives that are expected of them, rather than what is right for them.
However come to think of it, if you remain present, you can find meaning and purpose even in a small flower growing by the roadside. Awareness to the present moment and creating a positive difference in the lives of others is the secret of creating meaning in life.
