Excellence Reporte: Sean, what is the meaning of life?
Sean Carroll: The meaning of life is what we make out of it. The universe gives us no guidance here, nor do any powers outside the universe. Meaning follows mattering — the impact we have on the lives of others as well as ourselves. Meaning is personal and social; it’s created by human beings, and different lives can have different meanings.
Too many people chase an imaginary state of perfect happiness. Life is a process, and an ephemeral one; it is defined by flux and change, and eventually it ends. Rather than seeking a perfect moment, we should strive to have a good story to tell.
