Michael J. Gelb: The Meaning of Life and Creative Thinking

gelb-michael-7989_v194-Version-2Excellence Reporter: Michael, what is the meaning of life?

Michael J. Gelb: The meaning of life is to make life meaningful. How? By exercising the power of choice, discernment and consciousness to deepen our learning.

We don’t have a choice regarding the genetic patterns we’ve inherited, or the circumstances into which we are born. And we have limited choice in regard to the events and phenomena that we experience on a daily basis. We do have a choice about how we interpret our inheritance, and the events and circumstances of life. We make life meaningful by skillfully interpreting events (ie. creative thinking) and circumstances as learning experiences.

My sense of meaning is enriched when I interpret challenging situations as opportunities to avoid taking things personally, to develop more compassion (for myself and others), and to maintain my sense of humor. And, life becomes more meaningful when I can help others discover adaptive, creative interpretations of their challenges to optimize learning and deepen their sense of meaning.
