Excellence Reporter: Samantha, what is the meaning of life?
Samantha Thomas: Astrophysics has yet to discover whether there is meaning of life in the universal sense, and if there is a meaning, we may never know what that is. However, it is important that human beings feel a sense of meaning while they are alive. In that context, I’d say that the meaning of life is to craft a meaningful existence for yourself while you are here, and the way to do that is to find a purpose that fuels your life.
If you don’t feel like you have a purpose already, or don’t know what it means to have a purpose, finding one may feel like a daunting, impossible task. As a remediation to that, I’d encourage people to keep in mind that their purpose doesn’t have to be some grandiose calling. It can be many smaller purposes, or one purpose comprised of many small objectives.
It is also important to keep in mind that your purpose is likely to change over the course of your life, and that’s a good thing because it keeps life interesting. For example, your purpose now could be to solely act as the mother of your children, but when your kids grow up, you might decide to start a woman-run business that helps female entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life.
Studies show that having purpose in life not only provides meaning in the human experience, but also helps us live longer, happier and healthier lives. I recommend checking out the book Life On Purpose by Dr. Victor Strecher, or his Love Summit 2017 lecture (which pertains to both individual and organizational purpose): The Science Of Self-Transcendence: You & Your Organization.
