Mara Bishop: The Meaning of Life… Being Present and Expansive

shaman-mara-bishop-drumming-for-a-clientExcellence Reporter: Mara, what is the meaning of life?

Mara Bishop: The meaning of life is what we bring to it. Meaning can be made from anything at anytime. The intersection between the external and internal worlds, the physical and the spiritual, is the fertile place where we determine individually how we will interpret the meaning of our own lives. This may change for us over time.

I won’t presume to declare what the meaning of life is for you. For me, at this moment, it is about being as present and expansive in the love for the people who rely on me as possible. It is meaningful to me to watch patterns unfolding in the lives of the people who seek me out and to try and help them find peace and balance. Life is deeply meaningful to me when I can add comfort rather than pain to someone else’s day.

The warbling of the wrens in the morning is also meaningful to me because it is liquid joy which transports me from the heaviness that is also part of existence.

“Meaning” is not necessarily about cognition but about something more ephemeral and profound. I saw the most fantastic rainbow yesterday in the parking lot at Target. For me, it was a reminder of how power can be found in the intersection of our necessary everyday activities, like running errands, the radiance of nature, and the divine.
