What is the meaning of life?
We’re here to make others happy. It really is that simple.
Through our speech and actions, in big gestures and in small every-day ways, we influence everyone around us.
And the meaning of life is to make sure that people around you are a little (or a lot) happier because you’re alive than if you hadn’t been.
And here’s an interesting twist on that philosophy: It’s a fundamental recent realization of many scientific disciplines that we are at our core altruistic, empathetic and generous. Being good people and doing good deeds is not something we have to learn, it is who we naturally are.
We are happy when others are happy. Seeing someone succeed makes us happy for them. Seeing people enjoy the heck out of life, makes us feel great.
And we are unhappy when others are unhappy. Toddlers who see other toddlers in distress will try to soothe them. Adults hooked up to brain scanners, who see others experience some kind of pain, show clear activity in the brain’s pain center. Seeing others treated unfairly offends our own sense of justice and makes us feel miserable.
No man is an island and my happiness is inextricably linked to yours.
That’s why we’re here to make others happy.
