Richard L. Haight: The “Innate” Meaning of Life

RichardFaceBestExcellence Reporter: Richard, what is the meaning of life?

Richard L. Haight: Set aside the adult perspective for a moment and recall the innocent, magical world that you inhabited as a child. Remembering back, you might realize that there was innate meaning prior to the “philosophy of meaning” constructed by the rational, authoritarian mind of adulthood.

The innate meaning experienced by a psychologically healthy child is much more potent than the meaning of life that is contrived by most adults. That said, humans grow out of childhood for a reason — we must be productive in order to survive, and productivity largely comes from the rational mind. Yet the rational mind tends to block innocence and innate meaning, and it is this blocking that is the source of so much human suffering.

To reconnect with innate meaning and transcend this form of suffering, innocence and authority must begin working together peacefully. When this peace is achieved, you will begin to live a highly inspired, productive life, brimming with innate meaning.
